Modular for The Masses

Innovative, useful designs in somehow-affordable modules

Thank you for being a friend

One of the biggest goals of Hive Mind Synthesis is to work with other like-minded creators to bring our creations to the world - together.

Modular for the Masses is our first such partnership, and we’re beyond thrilled to be your exclusive source for all of their designs!

Hi, I'm Juanito, nice to meet you!

I began my synthesizer journey in 2016, putting together quirky noise machines and stuffing fragile audio circuits into tuna cans, connecting them together by twisting wires together because I had never seen a modular synthesizer in real life.

After I developed a consistent construction technique, using tin cans as enclosures, RCA cables for patching, and brown paper and wood glue to hold everything together, I made it my mission to bring this SUPER CHEAP format to all the people of the world, people who wanted the flexibility and joy of modular synthesis but who didn't have the disposable income to get involved, which has evolved into M4TM!

I learned how to design circuit boards, and have started to convert my hand-drawn schematics and rats-nest circuits into computer-drawn schematics and manufactured PCBs.

I love the open-source philosophy, so those with the ability to build or modify their own circuits from my plans are encouraged to do so.

Don't hesitate to message me anywhere you can find me, and I will do my best to help you out with any questions you may have.

DuckMixer

The M4TM DuckMixer is a new concept in compact performance-oriented mixers. On the surface, this is a great-sounding 8-mono-channel mixer with channel-by channel attenuation and panning, including headphone and modular-level outputs. And then there’s the DUCK, which allows you to use the first channel or one of the dedicated duck inputs and have everything else duck around it. The depth and decay of that ducking can be adjusted. On top of that, there’s a bonkers ZV.HP filter added to those dedicated inputs, 2 effects sends (mapped to the center 2 channels) - AND LIGHTS! Oh the lights! All jacks are illuminated from within, and the Attenuate, balance, and depth/decay knobs all light to indicate signal level. These are a big build project and not oft available, so get it while you can find it in stock!

909 Hat

No, it isn’t something to put on top of your drum machine, silly! This is a modular version of those gorgeous, grimy 909 hats with all of the bells and whistles - trigger inputs for both open and closed hi-hat sounds AND their accents (each with individual level and decay knob control), universal pitch adjustment via a pot and/or CV input, all mixed to one output. Get noisy, put a hat on it!

ETCH

Etch is a unique combination bit-crushing delay and filter module that is built for experimentation. The handy OLED display gives you an excellent view of how the independent Delay, Filter, and Crush effects are applied to your signal, with both CV and manual tweakability. Whether you want a subtle crunch, chaotic cacophony, or something in between, etch has you covered. On top of that, it’s a quantizer module, and can be further upgraded with newly developed firmware.

909 CRC Module image

909 CRC

This lil 2HP hottie has it all, if by “it all” you mean a faithful recreation of the Roland TR-909’s crash and ride, with a sneaky addition of an 808 cowbell, all accessible by cycling through with one button. Pitch is adjustable via knob or CV, and you even get an accent input and a level knob to help with your mixes

EasyEi8ht

EasyEi8ht is a minimalist eight-channel performance-oriented trigger sequencer with the most wonderfully-illuminated clicky keys. Pattern length is variable - anywhere between 16 and 256 steps are yours for the taking, and a freestyle mode allows you to add rolls, soloing, glitching, repeats and more to your trigger pattern. In-depth configuration is easy to access while in use - but this is also open-source so you can really have fun with your own custom firmware.

ClapClap

This whole thing started in 2023, when members of the Golden Shrimp Guild were cutting a major rug at Knobcon. Nobody knows who started it (It was The Killer Bee Relay Team and Juanito), but someone started handing out a lil "clap clap" at the end of each 4 bar phrase, ala Patrice Rushen's "Forget Me Nots". It caught on, and the GSG has been "clap clapping" at events ever since.

What does that have to do with this module? Well, everything. This module recrates that clap clap in your rack, automatically counting (and indicating via led) the appropriate 4-bar phrasing. If you're boring you can also use it as a regular clap module. Did I mention you can choose from multiple samples? Oh, you can. Via cv or a knob.

PlusSnare

It’s a snare - PLUS MORE!

Aside from being a great-sounding, CV-able snare module, the PlusSnare incorporates a built in delay, which is great for everything from tight double-hits to long, dubby snare echoes. You have full control over the tone and snap of the snare sound, as well as the delay time, number of repeats and overall mix. Pairs wonderfully with the DoublePlusBass

DoublePlusBass

The DoublePlusBass is a kick drum inspired by Thomas Henry's Bass+, with more control over all the parameters of the kick sound. Standout features include a possible 1V/oct tuning, a waveshaper that moves from a triangle wave to a clean sine, to a buzzy folded square wave, the possibility to use a sagging 808-style kick pitch envelope or a stabby 909-style spike pitch envelope. There's an envelope out jack that outputs a voltage designed to sidechain (or "duck") other signals. The EnvOut output sits at about 10V all the time, dropping down to 0V when the kick is being triggered, so can be used with VCAs to create room for the kick drum in your bass-heavy mix.

"Eleven knobs for a kick drum?" they will ask, "Preposterous!" but they will stop saying that when you turn up the volume.

Hungry Rat

Drainable Distortion with swappable Opamp Chips

This lil fella is based on the classic sound of the PROCO RAT - particularly when your battery starts to die. M4TM manages to cram this all into 2HP, with a swappable opamp chip, bass, treble, and distortion control so that you can color your sound
